JRB ART PRESENTS KARL BRENNER LANDSCAPE PAINTINGS &
MEDITATIONS BY PAULA WILLIS JONES

OKLAHOMA CITY, Okla. – Landscape paintings by Karl Brenner will share the spotlight with contemporary works by Paula Willis Jones during the month of July at JRB Art at The Elms. Both exhibits open with a reception on Friday, July 4, 2008, from 6:00 to 10:00 p.m., at JRB Art at The Elms during the monthly Gallery Walk in Oklahoma City’s historic Paseo Arts District. The shows run through July 26th.

Born and raised in California, Karl Brenner was first introduced to fine art painting in Chicago. His parents took him to The Art Institute for his eleventh birthday where he saw an exhibit of the British masters Constable, Turner, and Hogarth. He took all the art courses offered in high school and college, and was tempted to try for a career in fine art. However, he didn't know what such a career looked like, nor how to approach it. Instead he chose a career in medicine and surgery. Brenner’s love for painting never left him, and he returned to it via a Ted Goershner painting workshop in 1987. He has continued his art studies with several Prix de West artists including Jim Wilcox and Kurt Walters.

Since retirement from general surgery in North Carolina to the four corners region, plein air painting has absorbed most of his time. In 2007, Brenner’s painting, Willow Thickets, Lightner Creek was awarded first place in the oil and acrylics category of the 47th Annual Artists Alpine Holiday Art Show in Ouray, Colorado.

Raised in Haskell, Oklahoma, Paula Willis Jones experienced a successful career in education prior to igniting a passion for painting. After attending the Lyme Academy of Fine Arts in Connecticut, she returned to Oklahoma to pursue her passion for painting. Using oil painting as her base, her genre and portraiture focus grew into unique applications on metal and some mixed media work. Her work has been exhibited art galleries in Texas, Connecticut, and Oklahoma and featured in Martha Stewart Living magazine as well as on the Martha Stewart Living television show. Works by Jones are included in numerous private and public collections including that of Governor Brad Henry of Oklahoma, former Governor Frank Keating of Oklahoma, and the Federal Reserve. She has exhibited in shows curated by the National Cowboy and Western Heritage Museum and The National Cowgirl Museum and Hall of Fame.

For this exhibit, Jones has created a mixed media series called Meditations that represents her interpretations of a wide range of subjects including maintaining the earth, special people in her life, the journey into the unknown, and even one on the presidential candidates. Jones literally began each piece by writing the phrase or person’s name or idea in the center of the page. She then tried to be still in her mind and let the pen take control. Along with ink and watercolor, Jones used the computer as an additional medium.

“While these works are a departure from the landscapes and portraits I’ve done in the past, they represent my state of mind at this time,” said Jones. “I approached these pieces as simple meditations. I don’t often know what the lines and shapes mean, but I have faith that the universe knows and that they will send light into the world,” she added.
