JRB ART PRESENTS DAVID CRISMON, CHARLEEN WEIDELL & CHRISTMAS AT THE ELMS IN DECEMBER
OKLAHOMA CITY, Okla. – Fractured masterworks by David Crismon, sculptural objects by Charleen Weidell, and a festive array of art scaled for holiday gifting welcome visitors to JRB Art at The Elms during December. All three shows open with a reception on Friday, December 5, 2008, from 6:00 to 10:00 p.m. at JRB Art at The Elms during the monthly Gallery Walk in Oklahoma City’s Paseo Arts District. The exhibits run through December 27th.
David Crismon digitally alters large reproduced images of art-historical masterworks, splicing them into fractured tiles before painting them onto metal. The works become translations of photographed history that has become marred and transformed with the erosion of time. In his oil paintings on metal, David Crismon manipulates images from the past to accentuate the alterations that occur when reconstructing historical information.
As stated by Crismon “I felt it was appropriate to use an ‘old’ process, such as painting, to speak to these ‘new’ processes and technologies. In quoting various historical works, neither the past nor the present exist without the interference of the other; some information has been duplicated, altered or is missing altogether. I want to show the process of recovering and constantly revising the past; to show history being altered into mere data.”
Currently a professor of Fine Arts at Oklahoma Christian University and a lecturer at the University of Central Oklahoma, Crismon teaches art history, design history, painting and drawing. His works have been exhibited at 20 solo and 30 group exhibitions nationally including the Michael Berger Gallery, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, Craighead Green Gallery, Dallas, Texas, Mainsite Contemporary Art Gallery in Norman and JRB Gallery, Oklahoma City. He earned a Bachelors of Fine Arts degree in painting from the Kansas City Art Institute and a Masters of Fine Arts in painting from the University of Oklahoma where he also served as University Gallery Director.
For this exhibit, Charleen Weidell has created small sculptural clay urns with hammered copper lids. These personal containers may be used as cremation vessels, individually or in groupings. The Chair of the Art Department and head of the Metals program at the University of Central Oklahoma in Edmond, Weidell is a Metalsmith and Assistant Professor of Art. She has also taught at Metropolitan State College of Denver, San Diego State University and Design Institute San Diego. Grand Prize winner of the Society of American Silversmiths 2000 National Student Silver Design Competition, Weidell’s work has been featured in numerous exhibitions, several publications and a number of collections. Her Tart Server piece is included in the Victoria & Albert Museum collection in London, England.
Christmas at The Elms continues the Gallery’s annual tradition of offering accessible treasures by over 40 artists including Carla Anglada, Thomas Batista, Ruth Ann Borum, Karl Brenner, Scott Henderson, Jim Keffer, Paul Medina, JP Morrison, Dorothy Moses, Joy Richardson, Bert Seabourn, Clint Stone, Michi Susan and John Wolfe. Many of the artists who usually work in much larger formats have created a variety of small works in a diverse mix of painting, sculpture, photography, ceramics and mixed media for the exhibit. This annual event was organized to give people the opportunity to collect affordable art for themselves or to purchase the art of established artists as gifts.
JRB Art at The Elms, the former home of Nan Sheets which was built in 1920, is located at 2810 North Walker and is open Monday through Saturday, 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m., and Sunday 1:00-5:00 p.m. The Gallery website is www.jrbartgallery.com, e-mail address is jrb@coxinet.net and phone number is 405/528-6336.
