JRB ART AT THE ELMS PRESENTS MIXED MEDIA PAINTINGS BY MICHI SUSAN and NEW WORKS BY SOHAIL SHEHADA DURING FEBRUARY
OKLAHOMA CITY, Okla. – An exhibition of new works by Michi Susan and Sohail Shehada will open with an artist’s reception on Friday, February 6, 2009, from 6:00 to 10:00 p.m., at JRB Art at The Elms during the monthly Gallery Walk in Oklahoma City’s Paseo Arts District. The shows run through February 28th.
A Japanese artist who has lived and worked in Oklahoma for the past 30 years, Michi Susan is known for creating two-dimensional and sculptural works in various themes. For this exhibition, Susan has created paintings reminiscent of work she created early in her career. Texture takes center stage with layers of color and materials coming together to form a collection of both abstract and recognizable forms.
This exhibit, which Gallery director Joy Reed Belt calls Original Michi, integrates the artist’s Japanese heritage with elements of the postwar contemporary international art scene. The show will feature soft, yet colorful, interiors as well as her sought- after layered neutral, mixed media paintings.
Susan was educated at Japan’s Women’s University and Hosei University. One of Oklahoma City’s most revered artists, she received the Paseo Artists Association’s Lifetime Achievement Award in 2007. A mature artist, Susan serves as a role model for scores of younger artists. She has long been a major contributor to organizations that foster and support art and artists.
Also featured at JRB Art during February will be new sculptural works by Sohail Shehada. Shehada received an MFA in 1998 after completing his architectural degree, both from the University of Oklahoma. Prior to these, he earned a BFA from Oklahoma State University. Shehada has received an impressive list of public and private commissions in bronze and marble. He created the bronze bust of former Oklahoma City Mayor Patience Latting, which is located in the Oklahoma City Municipal Building. He also created several sculptures that are permanently displayed on the campus of The University of Oklahoma.
JRB Art at The Elms presents a diverse roster of emerging, established, and internationally exhibited artists who create in a wide range of media including: paintings, drawings, sculpture, ceramics, glass, fine crafts, functional objects, fiber art and photographs. This award winning gallery in Oklahoma City’s Paseo Arts District with its historic 4,500 square foot exhibition space, changes its exhibits monthly in a gracious environment that fosters a dialogue between the arts and the larger community while providing quality art for first time buyers as well as individual, corporate and museum collections.
JRB Art at The Elms, the former home of Nan Sheets which was built in 1920, is located at 2810 North Walker and is open Monday through Saturday, 10-6, and Sunday 1-5. Phone: (405) 528-6336, website: www.jrbartgallery.com, e-mail: jrb@coxinet.net.
