JRB ART AT THE ELMS FEATURES D.J. LAFON, KATHERINE LIONTAS-WARREN and TRACEY HARRIS IN APRIL

OKLAHOMA CITY, Okla. – An exceptional exhibition of works by D.J. Lafon, Katherine Liontas-Warren, and Tracey Harris will open with an artist’s reception on Friday, April 3, 2009, from 6:00 to 10:00 p.m., at JRB Art at The Elms during the monthly Gallery Walk in Oklahoma City’s Paseo Arts District. The show runs through April 25th.

For this exhibit, D.J. Lafon has created twelve new figurative paintings and three large drawings, universal in appeal, which focus on the stages of man. “Lafon dazzles us again with his virtuoso use of all media,” said Gallery owner Joy Reed Belt.

Lafon was born in Ogden, Utah on April 23, 1929, and took an early interest in art. He received his Bachelor of Fine Arts and Master of Fine Arts Degrees in painting and drawing from the University of Utah. Following his retirement as Chairman of the Art Department at East Central University in Ada in 1984, he established a studio in Norman and devoted himself to his artwork. Lafon has been the recipient of many honors and awards including the 2007 Lifetime Achievement Award from the Paseo Arts Association. His work is included in many private, corporate and museum collections.

Katherine Liontas-Warren brings to the exhibit a spirited collection of narrative art that is greatly influenced and inspired by American regional artists Thomas Hart Benton, Grant Wood and Alexander Hogue. "My color selection and recognizable shapes reflect a symbolic connection to these three artists through exaggerated compositional structures and a high intensity of hues, Liontas-Warren explains.

A Professor of Art at Cameron University in Lawton, Liontas-Warren has been a resident of Oklahoma since 1984. She earned her bachelor's degree from Southern Connecticut and a Master of Fine Arts degree from Texas Tech University. For the past 25 years, she has exhibited in 18 Solo shows and 203 National and Regional Juried Competitive Exhibitions throughout the United States and Europe, and has received numerous purchase awards and juried awards including, most recently, first place in the "Tornado Alley” category of the Oklahoma Art Guild’s 2009 national juried exhibit, for her stone lithograph, "The Arrival of Summer in Oklahoma”. In 2008, she received the Best of Oklahoma Award in the Texas-Oklahoma Art prize at the Wichita Falls Museum and was inducted into the Faculty hall of Fame for outstanding teaching and professional activities at Cameron University.

Tracey Harris is an emerging artist specializing in contemporary representational painting. Harris states the importance of “capturing the essence” of whatever she chooses to paint rather than mimicking the photograph of the subject. Her goals include “creating images that are serene and sustainable in an ongoing everyday atmosphere.” She has exhibited internationally and nationally, winning numerous awards.

Harris grew up in Fort Gibson, Oklahoma, and received a scholarship to study at the Kansas City Art Institute. After completing her bachelor’s degree, she moved to England to study painting and received her Master’s degree in visual arts from Goldsmiths’ College, University of London. She has taught Art History and Drawing. Harris’ work is in the collections of several national collectors.
