JRB ART AT THE ELMS PRESENTS TIMOTHY CHAPMAN PAINTINGS, KIM CAMP MIXED MEDIA WORKS and PAUL MEDINA ASSEMBLAGES IN MAY

OKLAHOMA CITY, Okla. – An exhibition of fanciful animal paintings by Timothy Chapman, three-dimensional mixed media works by Kim Camp, plus botanical assemblages by Paul Medina will open with an artist’s reception on Friday, May 1, 2009, from 6:00 to 10:00 p.m., at JRB Art at The Elms during the monthly Gallery Walk in Oklahoma City’s Paseo Arts District. The show runs through May 30th.

For Timothy Chapman, animals have always had a powerful presence. “They are mysterious, hilarious, and terrifying,” the Arizona-based artist says. “We eat them, worship them, classify them, and dream about them.” In his works, Chapman is intent on reminding viewers that there is much to cause a sense of wonder in Mother Nature’s vast variety of animal species, which he describes as “this prowling, flying, slithering, extended family of ours.”

However, Chapman believes that most people are immune to the strangeness of creatures like giraffes and zebras. They don’t really see how truly odd they are. Thus in his renderings, Chapman enjoys tweaking images and making up entirely new species in hopes that people will come away with a sense of having discovered something new. For inspiration, he turns to figures in art history, such as the surrealists, Hieronymus Bosch, and Giuseppe Arcimboldo, the 16th-century Italian painter who created bizarre portraits of people by incorporating images of animals and vegetables to depict their heads and faces.

After receiving his undergraduate degree in Biology from Occidental College near Los Angeles, Timothy Chapman went on to get a BFA from Arizona State University and then an MFA From Southern Illinois University at Edwardsville, both in printmaking. He later began painting seriously for want of a press. Most recently he was honored to be chosen by the U.S. State Department to show paintings in the U.S. Embassy in Tunisia, and to have work become part of its permanent collection in Myanmar (Burma). Chapman lives and works in Arizona.

Kim Camp is a self-taught artist who enjoys designing three dimensional characters incorporating found objects. Sometimes whimsical, often humorous commentaries on modern day society and at other times stunningly serious, Camp’s art pieces speak their own message. “These works are to be enjoyed on their singular merit, often mirroring the deepest part of us that is rarely expressed,” stated Camp.

Camp began creating mixed media in 2003. She believes her lack of formal training has allowed her the freedom to try new approaches and break with tradition. In November of 2008, Camp’s mixed media piece, Enslaved, was awarded Best of Show/First Place in the 2008 Oklahoma: Centerfold Biennial exhibit at the Leslie Powell Gallery in Lawton, Oklahoma.

After more than 25 years of art making, Paul Medina continues to shift and change while broadening his scope of materials and imagery. For this exhibit, Medina has created three dimensional botanical assemblages created from paper and wood. Over the years, Medina’s work has been exhibited at the Oklahoma Museum of Art, The Philbrook Museum of Art in Tulsa, and the Heard Museum in Phoenix, Arizona.
