JRB ART AT THE ELMS ANNOUNCES QUARTET OF OCTOBER EXHIBITS
OKLAHOMA CITY, Okla. – An exhibition featuring Elizabeth Hahn paintings, David Phelps sculpture, Jose’ Rodriguez paintings, and Patrick Riley masks will open with a reception on Friday, October 2, 2009, from 6:00 to 10:00 p.m., at JRB Art at The Elms during the monthly Gallery Walk in Oklahoma City’s Paseo Arts District. The show runs through October 31st.
Elizabeth Hahn was born in Shreveport, Louisiana and received a Bachelor of Arts degree from Oklahoma City University and Master of Fine Arts degree from the University of Oklahoma. She now makes her home in Santa Fe, New Mexico. The graphic quality of Hahn’s paintings originates from the years she worked as a silkscreen artist. Her acrylic paintings on board are playful and imaginative with smooth varnished finishes which give the works the overall quality of storybook illustrations.
For this show, Elizabeth focuses on the idea of transitioning from one stage of life into the next. Her current showing exhibits a strong theme of love, the joy and euphoria as well as the regret and the pain. Elizabeth continues to work with acrylic on board.
David Phelps is an internationally collected sculptor who creates monumental contemporary figurative artwork in bronze and other materials. He is known for his partially submerged human figures and his animals. In addition to commissioned public sculptures which can be found in Las Vegas and cities throughout the United States, he also creates small and medium sized sculptures as unique pieces and in limited edition bronze castings. Raised on his family's farm in California's central valley, Phelps received his BA from Humboldt State University and MFA in Sculpture from The University of Oklahoma. He lives and works in Oklahoma City.
David’s new work is a continuation of his exploration of the figure in contemporary sculpture. David explores the creation of unique pieces of artwork by combining cast bronze elements with other elements such as fabricated steel or cast cement. In a departure from working with a strong mental image of the completed work, in this new body of work starts with an idea that evolves as Phelps reacts to the processes and materials utilized in the creation of the sculpture.
Jose Rodriguez was born in Venezuela and completed his Bachelor of Fine Arts Degree from The University of Oklahoma. After receiving his Master of Fine Arts Degree from Indiana University in Bloomington, he became an Associate Professor of Art and Art History at the University of New Mexico. Rodriguez is noted for his encaustic portraits. These portraits are created by applying up to fifty coats of archivally stable wax in which color pigments have been added. In addition to the sensitivity of the face, Rodriguez creates elaborate background patterns in wax. Rodriguez’ work is in university and museum collections in Chile, Spain, Mexico, Texas, Indiana, Illinois, and New Mexico. The artist currently lives and works in Texas.
Patrick Riley’s masks have become a seasonal favorite at JRB Art at The Elms where they have traditionally been exhibited during October. Crafted of leather, highlighted with paint and embellished with feathers, jewels and other found objects, Riley’s creations evoke an exotic sense of mystery. Riley is a nationally recognized mask maker and artist. He has exhibited masks and presented masks workshops in many places including the John F. Kennedy Center in Washington D.C and the Fairtree Gallery of Contemporary Craft in New York City. He is on the Oklahoma Arts Council's Artist in Residence Program and has served as Visual Arts Coordinator for Oklahoma City Public Schools. Riley received the Oklahoma Governors Arts Award in 1995.
JRB Art at The Elms, the former home of Nan Sheets which was built in 1920, is located at 2810 North Walker and is open Monday through Saturday, 10-6, and Sunday 1-5. Phone: (405) 528-6336, website: www.jrbartgallery.com, e-mail: jrb@coxinet.net.
