JRB ART AT THE ELMS ANNOUNCES NOVEMBER EVENTS
OKLAHOMA CITY, Okla. – Exhibits of paintings by Jim Keffer, paintings and sculpture by John Wolfe, and the Gallery’s Seventh Annual Sale of Small Works by Noted Artists will open with an artist’s reception on Friday, November 6, 2009, from 6:00 to 10:00 p.m., at JRB Art at The Elms during the monthly Gallery Walk in Oklahoma City’s Paseo Arts District. The shows run through November 28th.
Native Oklahoma artist Jim Keffer paints and makes furniture in a colorful, contemporary primitive style. His primary subjects are the rural areas of New Mexico and western Oklahoma landscapes. Before beginning a painting journey now 9 years old, Jim spent his first 47 years “gathering material” as he calls it. He is self taught and paints in his Guthrie studio from sketches made in the field. Jim has won awards for both his paintings and furniture and was honored as the poster artist for Oklahoma City‘s centennial year arts festival.
John Wolfe was born in Texas in 1947. He graduated from Southwestern Oklahoma State University in 1970 with a degree in Art Education. He completed his M.Ed. at the University of Central Oklahoma in 1976. Retired after 35 years of teaching art in the Midwest City-Del City School System, he currently serves as adjunct art faculty at Rose State College in Midwest City, Oklahoma and Adams State College in Alamos, Colorado. Wolfe works in almost every medium and is especially known for his mixed media wooden and steel sculptures.
When asked about this exhibit, Joy Reed Belt, Director of The Elms, stated that “the paintings of both Keffer and Wolfe remind us of a time before the internet highway when people traveled by car, on foot, or horseback and we were more at peace with ourselves and our environment.” “These iconic paintings conjure up memories of family vacations, small towns, and a self reliant lifestyle, she continued.” John Wolfe’s sculptural work is made mostly from metal, wood and repurposed found objects. For this exhibit, Wolfe has created a series of figures as well as a non-figurative series that he calls “bundles.” Belt commented “that “perhaps the artist, in creating these bundles of found materials, is suggesting that we have to bundle our past in order to move forward.” In effect this show provides a seamless commentary on America’s journey from agricultural, rural, and more recently urban lifestyles to our increasingly global future.
The Small Works exhibit features accessible treasures by 100 artists who have created a variety of small works, all 8”X8” in a diverse mix of painting, sculpture, photography, ceramics and mixed media for the show. This annual event was organized to give people the opportunity to collect affordable treasures for themselves or to purchase the art of established artists as gifts.
JRB Art at The Elms presents a diverse roster of emerging, established, and internationally exhibited artists who create in a wide range of media including: paintings, drawings, sculpture, ceramics, glass, fine crafts, functional objects, fiber art and photographs. This award winning gallery in Oklahoma City’s Paseo Arts District with its historic 4,500 square foot exhibition space, changes its exhibits monthly in a gracious environment that fosters a dialogue between the arts and the larger community while providing quality art for first time buyers as well as individual, corporate and museum collections.
