OKLAHOMA CITY, Okla. – JRB Art at The Elms will welcome 2010 with its seventh annual New Year’s Day exhibit and celebration from 1:00 p.m. until 10:00 p.m. As is the Gallery’s custom, guests will be encouraged to feast on black eyed peas, ham, turkey, and assorted salads, dips, and pastries while enjoying, “Natural Selection”, the work of three internationally known artists with ties to Oklahoma: Shelley Horton-Trippe, who was born and educated in Oklahoma but has lived and worked in New Mexico for the past 30 years; Joe Andoe, a Tulsa native who received his M.F.A. from the University of Oklahoma and has lived and worked in New York since 1985; and Marko Kratohvil, a member of the Royal Academy of British Sculptors who recently moved to Oklahoma City. The annual New Year’s exhibits at JRB Art at The Elms have become known for their celebration of various art forms that have been created by artists with ties to Oklahoma. The exhibit will run through January 30, 2010.

FEATURED ARTISTS:

Shelley Horton-Trippe was born and raised in Oklahoma City. After receiving her M.F.A. from The University of Oklahoma, she traveled to Europe to study with the father of modern video, Nam June Paik. She has exhibited at the Salon d’ Autumn in Paris, the Venice Biennale, the Edinburgh Festival, as well as in other national and international venues. She has been the recipient of four National Endowment of the Arts grants, three New Mexico State Art Grants, a Wilter Byner Foundation grant in Poetry and has taught art at the College of Santa Fe. For the past 30 years she has made her home in Santa Fe where she also maintains a working studio. For the upcoming exhibit at JRB Art at The Elms, Horton-Trippe has created several large abstract paintings, smaller botanical paintings, multi media objects, and several videos which will be playing continuously throughout the opening. In describing Horton-Trippe’s work a designer and childhood friend says: “Her work is sexy and it is real because of the radiance of her spirit…she is utterly herself.” Horton-Trippe will be present at the opening and will present a Gallery Talk at 3:00 p.m. on Sunday, January, 3, 2010.

Joe Andoe who is admired for his minimal landscapes and idealized depictions of horses, dogs, deer, buffalo, wolves and flowers has made several Oklahoma videos that will be shown throughout the exhibit. Andoe was born in Tulsa, Oklahoma. Andoe comes from a farming family and is part Cherokee. He earned an M.F.A. from The University of Oklahoma in Norman, and has lived in New York City since 1985. His simple and elegant images of animals and landscapes and soulful sensitivity in his interpretation of his subjects still refer to his roots in the Great Plains. His paintings are represented in the permanent collections of: the Museum of Modern Art, New York; The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York; Museum of Fine Art, Boston; the San Diego Museum of Contemporary Art; and the St. Louis Museum of Art, St. Louis, MO.

Marko Kratohvil was born in Belgrade, Yugoslavia and has an M.A. in Sculpture from the University of Art in Belgrade. In 1991 he moved to London and was invited to become a Member of the Royal Society of British Sculptors. His sculptures and drawings have been exhibited extensively throughout Europe in private galleries and museums as well as the London Art Fair, and the Maastricht Art Fair. He has taught Sculpture at the University of Art in Belgrade and the University of Manchester. He has sculptures in over 40 private collections and his applied art commissions include over 30 realized projects of staircases and other architectural and interior design features. Kratohvil will be exhibiting drawings and a variety of metal sculptures in the show which is opening New Year’s Day at JRB Art at The Elms.

“Natural Selection” continues the Gallery’s tradition of welcoming the New Year with groundbreaking exhibitions. In 2004, the Gallery presented “Early Oklahoma Artists and Master Teachers” that featured the works of ten artists who were contemporaries of Nan Sheets and Oscar Jacobson. In 2005, “Print Makers of the Prairie” highlighted the work of twenty regional artists who gained a national reputation for excellence in printmaking. In 2007, “Ten Since Statehood” featured artists representative of the quality and diversity of art that comes from Oklahoma. In 2008, “Next” presented a select group of contemporary artists whose work represented the content and style of art being created at the beginning of Oklahoma’s second century.

JRB Art at The Elms presents a diverse roster of emerging, established, and internationally exhibited artists who create in a wide range of media including: paintings, drawings, sculpture, ceramics, glass, fine crafts, functional objects, fiber art and photographs. This 8,000 square foot award-winning gallery in Oklahoma City’s Paseo Arts District, changes its exhibits monthly in a gracious environment that fosters a dialogue between the arts and the larger community while providing quality art for first time buyers as well as individual, corporate and museum collections.
