…AND THE STORIES THEY TELL

OKLAHOMA CITY, Okla. — In March, JRB Art at The Elms will feature the work of J.P. Morrison, Jeremy Luther, and Kim Camp in the exhibit “….And the Stories They Tell.” “Though their styles are dramatically different, the paintings and objects by all three of these artists are rich in narrative content,” states Joy Reed Belt, Director of the gallery. The exhibit will open on March 5, 2010 from 6:00 until 10:00 pm, during the monthly Gallery Walk in Oklahoma City’s Paseo Arts District. The exhibit will run through March 26, 2010. The artists will be featured in a Gallery Talk at 3:00 pm. on Sunday March 7, 2010.

As a child J.P. Morrison read fairy tales, a practice she continues today. Inspired by the art she saw on a trip to Santa Fe with her parents at age 11, J.P. (whose full name is Josephine Pearl, the names of her two grandmothers) decided that she wanted to become an artist. Fascinated with painting, drawing, and writing her own fairy tales, J.P. received Bachelor of Fine Art degrees in both Painting and Creative Writing from the Kansas City Art Institute. “Her paintings, which are mostly figurative and meticulously crafted are both ethereal and realistic,” comments Belt. “Not only is there mystery and drama, but each of her paintings tells a story.”

Jeremy Luther is an illustrator and letterpress printmaker, who is from Kansas City and who received Bachelor Degrees in both Printmaking and Art History from the Kansas City Art Institute, cites comic books and action heroes as pervasive influences in his work. Luther’s series of narrative and figurative paintings and drawings titled, “The Pensive Penguin” will be featured along with Morrison’s work. In this series of high articulated action filled scenes the viewer can find a penguin looking on somewhat pensively as the story unfolds. Luther became interested in penguins during several months long visit to Norway from which he recently returned.

Kim Camp attributes her passion for sculpting and visual arts to the years she spent studying, choreographing and performing modern dance. Camp, the First Place Winner of the 2009 Oklahoma: Centerfold Biennial exhibit. The series of three dimensional assemblages and paintings she has created for this exhibit is entitled: “Trophy Wives: Lipstick and Eyeliner.” Each of Camp’s women has her own identity and tells her own story. Collectively this highly charged body of work tells the story of a gender, which while being objectified by contemporary society, becomes the stronger gender in that society.
