BRETT WESTON
PHOTOGRAPHS
FEATURED AT
JRB ART AT THE ELMS

OKLAHOMA CITY, Okla. – An exhibition and sale of photographs by master photographer Brett Weston (1911-1993) will open at JRB Art at The Elms with a reception on Friday, April 4, 2008, from 6:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m. during the Paseo First Friday Gallery Walk. The show runs through April 26 at the Gallery located at 2810 North Walker in Oklahoma City. The JRB Art at The Elms exhibit runs concurrently with an exhibit of Weston’s silver gelatin prints at the Oklahoma City Museum of Art.

The son of celebrated American photographer Edward Weston, Brett Weston was born in Los Angeles in 1911. He became a part of his father’s circle of California-based photographers devoted to the promotion of “straight photography”. This exhibition showcases a broad range of Weston’s work focusing on his uniqueness of vision through the puristic method of straight photography. Whether he extracted the detailed patterns of mud cracks, or included the distant silhouette of a mountain range, Brett continuously expressed the poignant beauty of his surroundings. Since Brett Weston’s death in 1993, his photographs have continued to represent the infinite discoveries of artistic explorations.

Brett Weston’s straight shot photography is marked by a strength of form. Whether it was an abstract airplane wing or water droplets inches away from his camera, his images seize exhilarating patterns in the natural and man-made world. No photographer in the history of the medium has been as involved with the natural landscape over as long a period as Brett Weston. From the earliest examples of his photography, beginning in the mid-1920s, and ending with the last photographs he made in 1993, it is evident that Brett Weston’s vision was unique and consistent.

Throughout his 60 year career, Weston challenged the boundaries of black and white photography through experimentation with abstraction and recognizable subject matter. In the foreword to Weston’s famous “White Sands” portfolio, Nancy Newhall writes, “Instead of abstract sculpture, he saw a magic play of light: grasses, ghostly in their winter death, shadowing the massive, luminous dunes with silver, the spikes and bells of yucca black as jet against them. He saw the delicate aerial structure of eerie plants reaching into the skies, the dunes grey with storm or gleaming with snow against dark distant mountains – endless absorbing variations!”

JRB Art at The Elms is located in Oklahoma City’s historic Paseo Arts District at 2810 North Walker and is open Tuesday through Saturday from 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m., and Sunday from 1:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. The Gallery website is www.jrbartgallery.com and phone number is (405) 528-6336.
